Red Planet Day was first celebrated in 2009 by the Mars Society, a non-profit organization that advocates for the exploration and settlement of Mars. The date of November 28th was chosen because it is the anniversary of the first successful flyby of Mars by the Mariner 4 spacecraft in 1964.
