In State Affairs, the Odisha Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, approved the Mission Shakti Scooter Yojana. The scheme aims to provide an interest subvention on bank loans up to Rs 1 lakh for beneficiaries to purchase scooters. The government has allocated a budget of Rs 528.55 crore for the scheme’s execution over the next five years. Moving to Banking & Finance, PhonePe launched an ‘Income Tax Payment’ feature on its app to enable taxpayers to pay self-assessment and advance tax directly through UPI or credit card payments. The company partnered with PayMate, a B2B payments and service provider, for this feature.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) added “NongHyup Bank” to the Second Schedule of the RBI Act, 1934. NongHyup Bank, an agricultural bank headquartered in South Korea, was established in 2012 and entered India in 2016. The RBI also informed that Canara Bank was the top lender to public sector companies during the fiscal year 2022-23, extending loans amounting to ₹187,813 crore.
In another RBI notification, the central bank imposed business restrictions on The National Co-operative Bank Ltd, capping deposit withdrawals at Rs 50,000 per account. The bank is not allowed to issue fresh loans or accept fresh deposits without prior approval from the RBI, and depositors will be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amounts up to Rs 5 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation.

As per RBI’s data, banks wrote off bad loans worth over Rs 2.09 lakh crore during the financial year 2022-23, contributing to a total loan write-off of Rs 10.57 lakh crore by the banking sector over the past five years. This move helped bring down gross non-performing assets to a 10-year low of 3.9 percent of advances by March 2023.
The Central government appointed Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He has had a distinguished legal career, becoming a registered advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1989, and later with the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir. He became a Senior Advocate in 2011 and was appointed as a permanent judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir in 2013. The Andhra Pradesh High Court, with a sanctioned strength of 37 judges, is currently functioning with 30 judges.
