India celebrated its 77th Independence Day on August 15, 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort in Delhi, unfurling the national flag during the ceremony. Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International, passed away at the age of 80 due to a cardiac arrest. He was a pioneer in creating public toilets and established Sulabh International, an organization dedicated to promoting human rights, environmental sanitation, and waste management. In recognition of his efforts, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his work in liberating manual scavengers and preventing environmental pollution through innovative toilet technology.

On the occasion of Independence Day 2023, President Droupadi Murmu conferred 76 Gallantry awards to members of the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces.
