Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen, currently ranked 19th in the world, emerged victorious in the Men’s Singles category at the Canada Open 2023 badminton tournament held in Calgary, Canada. In the final match, he defeated Li Shi Feng from China with a score of 21-18, 22-20. Despite being down four game points in the second set, Lakshya showed remarkable resilience and saved all the points to win the game in straight sets. This win marks Lakshya Sen’s first BWF World Tour title after nearly a year since his Commonwealth Games triumph.

The National Housing Bank (NHB) has successfully operationalized the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (UIDF), which has an initial corpus of Rs 10,000 crore. The establishment of UIDF was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the 2023-24 Budget speech with the objective of utilizing the priority sector lending shortfall to facilitate the development of urban infrastructure in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Loans from UIDF will carry an interest rate of 5.25%, which is Bank Rate minus 1.5%.

Parth Salunkhe made history by becoming the first male archer to win a gold medal in the recurve category at the Youth World Championships 2023 held in Limerick, Ireland. Hailing from Satara, Maharashtra, Parth defeated a Korean archer in the Under-21 men’s recurve individual final. India’s largest depository, the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), has filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for an initial public offering (IPO). The IPO will involve the paring of stakes by IDBI Bank, NSE, SBI, HDFC Bank, and Union Bank of India. Currently, IDBI Bank and NSE hold stakes of 26% and 24% in NSDL, respectively, while SBI, Union Bank of India, and Canara Bank are also key stakeholders.

The Ayushman Bharat-Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs) program in India has expanded to over 1.60 lakh centers and recorded a footfall of over 178.87 crore as of June. By the end of August, the government plans to add additional services such as screening, prevention, and control to the program. The essential list of medicines and diagnostics has also been expanded to provide access to 171 medicines at Primary HWCs, 105 at Secondary Health Care-HWCs, and 63 diagnostics at PHC-HWCs.

India and Tanzania have commenced trade settlements in local currencies, as announced by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. This initiative aims to promote commerce between the two countries. Bilateral trade between India and Tanzania has witnessed strong growth, reaching USD 6.4 billion in the year 2022-23. India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $1.853 billion to reach $595.051 billion in the week ending June 30, 2023, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The previous reporting week had seen a decline in reserves by $2.901 billion to $593.198 billion. In October 2021, India’s forex reserves had reached an all-time high of $645 billion. The central bank has been utilizing these reserves to defend the value of the rupee amidst pressures caused primarily by global developments.

The inaugural session of the third G20 Culture Working Group (CWG) meeting took place in Hampi, Karnataka. The session was addressed by Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi. The meeting focused on four priority areas: protection and restitution of cultural property, harnessing living heritage for a sustainable future, promotion of cultural and creative industries and creative economy, and leveraging digital technologies for the protection and promotion of culture.

The Department of School Education and Literacy released the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) combined report for the years 2020-21 and 2021-22. This report assesses the performance of the school education system at the district level through a comprehensive analysis. The grading system ranges from the highest grade, Daksh, to the lowest grade, Akanshi-3. Daksh represents districts scoring more than 90% of the total points in a category or overall, while Akanshi-3 indicates districts scoring up to 10% of the total points.
