India emerged victorious in the SAFF Championship, defeating Kuwait with a score of 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out. The tournament took place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This marked India’s ninth triumph in the SAFF Championships, with goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh playing a crucial role by saving the final kick from the Kuwaiti captain. In the semi-final, India overcame Lebanon, while Kuwait secured a 1-0 victory over Bangladesh.

Ajit Agarkar, a former Indian cricketer, has been appointed as the chairman of the Senior Men’s Cricket Selection Committee. The committee now includes Ajit Agarkar, Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath. Agarkar boasts an impressive cricketing career, having represented India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is. He also held the record for being the fastest to reach 50 ODI wickets for a decade.

Lallianzuala Chhangte, an Indian football team midfielder, was named the AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year for the 2022-23 season. The Department of Telecommunications has launched the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) to foster innovation and collaboration in next-generation wireless technology. During an India-hosted virtual summit, Iran became the new permanent member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The SCO, founded in 2001, now has a total of nine member countries. India and Pakistan became permanent members in 2017. The SCO headquarters is located in Beijing, China.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sai Hira Global Convention Centre in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, through video conferencing. Dignitaries and devotees from around the world attended the inauguration. The convention centre, constructed by the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, is located in Prasanthi Nilayam, the main ashram of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has introduced the RuPay Select Debit card, providing users with luxury, convenience, and security in one card. To be eligible, individuals need to have a savings account or a certificate of deposit with IOB and maintain an average daily balance of ₹1 lakh. The cash withdrawal limit is set at ₹50,000, and the daily limit for usage in merchant establishments is ₹5 lakh, with an e-commerce platform limit of up to ₹3,50,000.

Qu Dongyu from China has been re-elected as the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for a second term. Qu received 168 out of 182 votes in the ballot of FAO member countries. His new term will run from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2027. Qu was initially elected as FAO Director-General in 2019, and under his leadership, the World Food Forum (WFF) was established in 2021.

Meesho, a Softbank-backed e-commerce platform, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Vision & AI Lab of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for a one-year collaboration. The partnership aims to foster innovation in generative artificial intelligence, specifically in the field of multimodal large language models, to enhance the user experience in the e-commerce industry.

The Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) and the Indian Chamber of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration in the food and agriculture sectors of the UAE and India. The agreement strengthens the strategic partnership between the two countries and seeks to facilitate knowledge exchange, trade promotion, investment, and research and development collaboration.

According to a report by the World Bank and WTO, India’s share of global commercial services exports has doubled from 2% in 2005 to 4.4% in 2022. The report, titled “Trade in services for development,” also highlights that China has doubled its share from 3% to 5.4% during the same period. In India, South Africa, and Türkiye, more than 10% of total services sector jobs are directly linked to cross-border services exports.

Lt Gen MU Nair has been appointed as the Head of the National Cyber Coordination Centre, replacing Lt Gen (ret.) Dr. Rajesh Pant. Lt Gen Nair brings extensive experience to the position, having served as the additional director general, head of signal intelligence, chief of staff of a corps, and command. He is a distinguished alumnus of the National Defence Academy and possesses profound knowledge of both domestic and international communication.
